Necrosis is a localized, unnatural death of living tissue or cells. Unlike another type of cell death known as apoptosis, in necrosis, chemicals may be released by the dying cells, which harm other cells. This may lead to additional loss of tissue. When significant amounts of tissue die by lack of blood supply, it is known as gangrene.
Necrosis may occur due to cancer, chemical exposure, disease, infarction, infection, inflammation, injury, ischemia (lack of blood supply), or radiation. Therefore, There is no known way to reverse necrosis. Also, necrosis has no established method of treatment, but typically, if a limb is affected it may be elevated and immobilized. Depending upon the type of necrosis and other conditions of the situation, additional treatment may be possible.
