Dysplasia is abnormal cell proliferation in a tissue, which is not cancerous. It is characterized by a decrease in mature cells and an expansion of immature cells, leading to an abnormal arrangement of tissue. Such cells may return to proper behavior, but in some cases they instead become malignant.
Dysplasia may be asymptomatic (without symptoms), however, infections that accompany the dysplasia may produce symptoms. Also, cervical dysplasia may result in bleeding, and fibrous dysplasia may bring brittleness, deformity, pain, and uneven growth to the affected bones. Dysplasia treatment depends upon the location and type of dysplasia, and options may include: cryotherapy (freezing) and surgery (ablation, excision, removal).
