Diaphoresis is a condition of excessive and unpredictable sweating, even in cool temperatures and while resting. Diaphoresis which takes place at the armpits, feet, and hands is known as primary hyperhidrosis, or focal hyperhidrosis. This condition is thought to affect between 2 and 3 percent of the general population. Primary hyperhidrosis is idiopathic in that it has no known cause, although it does seem to have a genetic factor, as it appears to run in families.
Diaphoresis which occurs due to an underlying medical condition is known as secondary hyperhidrosis. In this condition, sweating may occur at any area of the body. Some of the diseases and conditions that cause this form of diaphoresis may include: acromegaly, alcohol, anxiety, caffeine, cancer, carcinoid syndrome, heart attack (acute myocardial infarction), heart disease, hyperthyroidism, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels), infections, lung disease, malaria, medications (some), menopause, Parkinson's disease (PD), pheochromocytoma (type of adrenal gland tumor), shock, spinal cord injury, stroke, strong emotions, substance abuse, and tuberculosis (TB).
Wetness from excessive sweating is the main symptom of diaphoresis. A doctor or medical professional may examine the patient to look for visible signs of sweating, and may also perform tests to check for excess sweat, and ask questions about the sweating. Treatment normally involves caring for the underlying medical condition behind the diaphoresis.
